Swimming Lessons
We are fast approaching our in-term swimming weeks. This year we will be going to Aqua Motion in Wanneroo. We have 2 sessions with lower and upper primary students and there is a short turn around time. Unfortunately there is only a small public changing area, which does not give the space needed for students to change at the swimming pool. Instead, students will change into and out of swimmers at school. For this reason it is really important to send in thongs or slides, and a towel/dressing gown/oodie which can keep students wrapped up as they return to school. Goggles for students is also advised.
Please make sure to clearly name all pieces of clothing.
Parking
We are transitioning from the rainy season of Makuru to Djilbra and are experiencing lots of cold wet mornings and afternoons. This can make dropping and picking your children from school difficult. Please refrain from stopping on the road and having children get out of the car in traffic, as it is very busy. Parents of students in the junior area are being asked for feedback about meeting staff at the gate to try and alleviate the congestion during drop off and pick up times.
NAIDOC Week
Last week was the school’s NAIDOC Week! NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for to learn about and celebrate First Nation cultures and histories. Throughout the week the students participated in a range of in-class activities including bracelet making, shared books and stories, and recognised the achievements of Aboriginal people. Derek Nannup made a visit to the school and spent the day completing activities with groups of children. In between burst of wet weather, Friday’s family picnic day commenced with an Acknowledgement of Country beautifully presented by Mickeel, included music from the choir and a drumming performance, and ended with a highly competitive AFL Game.

Room 28 Read We're Going on a Bear Hunt
This term in Literacy, we have started a Talk for Writing unit of work on the book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen. The students in room 28 went on a bear hunt. They travelled through long grass, a blue river, thick mud, a dark forest, and a whirling storm before they came to a cave where they found a bear.
To continue the students' interest, we will be having sensory play, retelling the story with ALD boards, and doing different types of craft during our literacy and numeracy sessions.
We are looking forward to finishing the term by innovating our story and creating our own whole class story.
Room 14 Learn About the Letter 'K'
Last week we were learning about the letter ‘K’. We looked at the capital ‘K’ and the lowercase ‘k’. The children all enjoyed trying to write these on the whiteboard. We also looked at pictures of items with the beginning sound of ‘k’ and matched some of these on a powerpoint. Some children traced the letters and some wrote them independently. We read a story called “Being Kind” written by Trace Maroney. We then enjoyed making our kindness crowns and pretended to be kindness kings and queens. Everyone had lots of fun choosing and sticking gems onto our crowns. Look how awesome we look.
We enjoyed learning about the letter ‘K’ and we always remember to be kind.
We have also been learning about the story of ‘The Enormous Turnip’ for our Talk for Writing unit.
We have been learning and having fun doing the actions to our story. We went to Mrs Bennetts garden to help her pull an enormous turnip from her garden. It was hard work and we needed help from everyone to pull the ‘enormous’ turnip out of the magic soil. We also planted some turnip seeds and we are regularly checking to see how they are growing. Everyone has had fun enjoying seed play in our tuff tray in the classroom.
Welcome to the latest update from our vibrant art room!
I am delighted to share the incredible artistic journey our students have embarked upon during NAIDOC Week this year. Inspired by the rich cultural heritage of Australia's Indigenous peoples, our art room has been abuzz with creativity and innovation. Our students have immersed themselves in various art forms, each reflecting the spirit of NAIDOC Week and celebrating Indigenous culture.
Our youngest students have been busy making yarn texture sticks, a project that not only introduces them to the world of textures but also hones their fine motor skills. These sticks are not just pieces of art but expressions of their imagination and learning journey.
The older students have taken their creativity to new heights by crafting sculptures using hay and yarn. Inspired by the works of Western Australian Artist Sharyn Egan, these sculptures are stunning examples of how art can blend different materials to tell a unique story. Throughout this experience, our students have learned about the significance of texture in art, exploring various techniques in sculpting and weaving, and, most importantly, gained a deeper appreciation for Indigenous art and culture.
Kaya Wanjoo – Hello and welcome.

Recycling Station
Remember to keep on bringing in your items for recycling. See the attached for what you can bring in. When dropping it in to the school please put it into the correct bin. Make sure items are not in a plastic bag and are clean. Our students diligently go through the bins in order to pack and send off for recycling and we don’t want nasty surprises for them. Our focus bin this newsletter is Coffee Pods – the need to be clean, not leaking and not in another bag. These are then packaged and sent to a local TerraCycle Material Recovery Facilities located in the same country in which the waste originates. Once sorted by category, the different material types are cleaned and then sent to third-party partners to process the materials into usable forms.
If you would like to know more about what you can do at home for recycling, go to www.terracycle.com.au
Chicken Coop is a Go!
The chicken coop has been partially funded by a grant from Waste Sorted Schools, with JESC topping up the remainder.
Containers for Change
Thanks to a kind donation from Emily Hamilton (MLA – Member for Joondalup), the school now has key tags with our school recycling number on it. So, you can take your 10c containers straight to a recycling point. Tags will be going home within the next week. Alternatively, you can still pop them in the big bin near admin and put the lids in the small green bin next to it. This is a joint fundraising effort between the P&C and Sustainability. We encourage you to support a worthy cause. The money raised will go towards the purchase of a table with seating that is made out of plastic bottles. The students have chosen this as their goal and initiative of giving back to the school. It will go into the vegetable garden area to make this area an outdoor learning space.
Happy gardening and sustainable thinking,
Sandra Bennett – Environment & Sustainability Teacher (JESC). Sustainability Coordinator (Joondalup Schools)
P&C Update
Welcome to Term 3! What an exciting term ahead, with some fun P&C events to look forward to.
We did our first Subway fundraiser for the NAIDOC picnic last Friday 26th. It was a great success with a total of 222 subs made fresh for our hungry kids and $330 going directly back to the school. Thank you to P&C member, Hwee Tan for coordinating this fundraiser!
The next exciting events are the Father's Day stall and Pyjama Disco! Both in the last week of August. The disco is FREE for all students, but you still must register via trybooking.com/CSCBN.
Look out for the opportunity for volunteering at the disco. We will require lots of parent helpers on the night to keep it running smoothly and keep our kids safe and happy. We will be sending the Disco Volunteer Sign-Up sheet soon.
Our next P&C meeting is Wednesday 31st July, 7pm in the school staff room. Everyone is welcome.
Have a great Term 3 everyone.
