Principals Report

What a busy end to our 2018 school year. Our Year 6’s have officially graduated, and we celebrated the occasion with a formal graduation ceremony. I would like to congratulate all our graduating Year 6 students, and acknowledge Julia Smith for receiving the Citizenship award, Liv Dyrting who received the STEM Award and Adele Lawrence who received the Commitment to Excellence Award.

The class went to Hogs Breath Café for a graduation lunch and it was delicious! I wish all our Year six students well in the future – please keep us up to date with what you are doing, and even though you won’t be at Joondalup, you will always be a Joondalup Kid.

Last week Joondalup Education Support Centre celebrated Adventure Week and we went on numerous outings as a whole school, and as junior and senior cohorts. The weather was perfect for our excursions and Outback Splash – The Maze was definitely a favourite. Our students really enjoy being together, and it was lovely seeing everyone playing and hanging out together – regardless of year group or class.

I would like to thank our amazing School Board, and School P&C for their hard work and dedication to making our school the great place that it is. This year we transitioned to a new Board Chair. Nikki Schwaggerman thank you for being our Board Chair over the years. Theresa Pastor is our current Board Chair and I would also like to thank her for continuing to run our School Board professionally and efficiently.

School returns for students on Monday 4th February. Our school office closes down during school holidays. I wish everyone a happy and safe break, and look forward to seeing everyone again in 2019.

Natalie Burns
Principal

Year 6 Graduation

Congratulations to our graduating students. We wish you all the best for High School and know that you will be amazing in whatever you put your minds to.

Room 22

We have had lots of fun in Room 22 over the past few weeks. We have explored a variety of letters and sounds that we have been learning, begun making words using light up boards, letter tiles and play dough as well as participating in lots of fine motor activities.

Room 25

This year our Buddy Class was Room 4 with Miss Mercer. Not only did we share special events and days with them, three mornings a week they came to our class and peer tutored us through our Morning Jobs Routine for 20 minutes where we had daily practise of writing our names, writing sentences, reading and our maths focus for that time.

The power of peer tutoring has long been recognised as a sound evidence-based learning strategy and this has been shown this year with the learning not only being academic but social and emotional as well for students from both classes.

We have had some great fun and laughs together and that's just the teachers! Everyone has broadened their friendship circle and come out winners as can be seen by our photos!

We wish everyone in Room 4 all the best for 2019!

Adventure Week

Last week we celebrated 2018 as a whole campus with Adventure Week. Starting with Water Skiing on the Monday/Tuesday and finishing with our Friday Fun Day. I’m sure you would agree there were lots of tired students at the end of the week.

We had so much fun during the week with lots of photos taken at each event. Enjoy looking through our Adventure Week Folders for 2018.

Science & Digital Technologies News

It has been a fantastic year for STEM at Joondalup. The STEM club has continued to be a popular lunchtime activity for many of our students, and it has been remarkable to see their growth. Next year, we will be opening an outdoor maker space. This area will allow students to continue to develop their design, building and collaborative skills both in class and at lunchtimes. I would also like to take the opportunity to wish good luck to our graduating Year 6 students as they move to the next stage of their learning journey at Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre. Special congratulations go to Liv Dyrting, the worthy recipient of this year’s Joondalup Education Support Centre STEM award. I look forward to more exciting learning with all of you in 2019.

Thank you
Rory Critchley

Created by students in Rooms 7,8,25,26 and 27. Students worked with an element of value to give the illusion of a 3D tree. Many students added decorations to turn them into festive Christmas trees.

Sustainability Corner

Garden of Weedin News

What a fabulous and abundant year it has been in the school vegetable garden. We have achieved 2 awards for our efforts in nurturing our plants and our produce has been outstanding. We came 4th at the Perth Royal Show and 2nd at the Wanneroo Show. Awesome effort from the Garden Club and Mrs Young’s class! All of this has been achieved with support from the school community. So thanks to the After School Garden club members. You are an awesome group of enthusiastic children and parents.

A big thankyou to Mrs Young for running the worm farms with her team of helpers and for her class effort at the Wanneroo Show. I would like to personally say a big thankyou to Mrs Young, whom without her support the Sustainability programs at the school would not run as efficiently. Your enthusiasm and humour is greatly appreciated. Thank you to Natalie Burns and Russell Hahn for believing in the wonder and power of learning from nature and how to embrace sustainability within the school environment. Your support is valued.

Take a look at our garden if you get the chance and see how our efforts are going. We are totally organic and use no pesticides or fertilizers. We now have a resident bobtail lizard who takes care of the snails (and eats the strawberries), and an army of native frogs, who have taken up residence in the composting bins.

Recycling Program

The schools have had a very successful year in their recycling programs. With the contributions from the school community we have diverted many, many bin loads of waste to be recycled into new products and the organic waste stream has gone to feed the worms and into the compost system.

News for 2019

We will run the garden in a different way next year. Planting will be around a theme such as, ‘Pizza, soup, salad, heirloom, Mexican, Thai’ gardens and classes will all work together to plant and nurture the garden to then prepare and cook with the ingredients. The canteen will also be using produce from the garden in their healthy lunches.

The after school garden club will run in Terms 1 and 4 to coincide with favourable weather and a lunchtime club will run in Terms 2 and 3. Details will be sent home.

Parent and community representatives are needed for the Sustainability committee next year. We have very informal meetings once a term that decide where the schools are heading on this journey. This is your chance to have a say. If you are interested, please contact Sandra Bennett

Watch the garden area for new and exciting happenings early in the New Year. Stacey and I would like to wish you all the best for the holiday season and please get out into the sunshine and enjoy the garden.

Happy gardening and recycling,
Sandra & Joe – Sustainability Coordinators
