At Joondalup Education Support Centre, we agree with the statement “No student is too anything to be able to read and write” (David Yoder, ISAAC 2000), and it is for this reason that we implement a Balanced Literacy model of teaching literacy in our classes. Balanced Literacy acknowledges that children do not all learn in the same way.
After an initial assessment, your child will be classed as an Emergent, Transitional or Conventional learner and activities will be tailored directly to their literacy needs.
Balanced Literacy provides multilevel literacy instruction that caters to all students including those with Complex Communication Needs (CCN).
Along with our Balanced Literacy approach we run a whole school streamed literacy program where students are placed in small groups with students across the school of similar academic ability. For students who may not yet be ready for this, we deliver a program using explicit teaching in learning the alphabet as well as a Communication group catering for students who are still developing their early communication needs.
Having these school based programs available ensures that all students are being catered for each and every day.
